Shields Up: Cybersecurity Project Management
We expect more automation, integration, and online activity in the foreseeable future resulting in more cybersecurity risks and issues. Therefore, organizations and individuals are spending more resources on cybersecurity projects to implement, maintain and optimize the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their digital services and data. The demand for cybersecurity projects and expertise is growing; it is a great time to learn about cybersecurity project management.
Cybersecurity is complex and aligning to a multitude of international standards can be problematic. In Dr. Greg Skulmoski’s presentation, attendees will be introduced to a project management approach that combines standards and is tailored to cybersecurity projects detailed in his book Shields Up: Cybersecurity Project Management. The Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ITIL Service Management, ISO Risk Management, ISO Quality Management, and ISO Information Security Standards are aligned into a project delivery approach applicable to most cybersecurity projects, most of the time.

Managing cyber security projects with ease
The presentation begins with an introduction to the role of a project manager in an information security organization and highlights the significance of confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA) as the foundational principles of information security. It further explores the importance of IAAA - Identification, Authentication, Authorization, and Accountability - in securing information systems. The speaker's extensive experience in the industry is showcased through a detailed exploration of the expectations from a successful project manager. Technical knowledge, leadership, and communication skills are identified as critical attributes necessary for overseeing security-related projects. The presentation delves into project planning and execution, risk management, compliance, vendor and stakeholder management, budgeting, and resource allocation, as well as incident response and business continuity. A significant portion of the presentation is dedicated to the salient features of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0. Attendees gain insights into the risk-based approach, improved supply chain risk management, integration of privacy and data protection, self-assessment methodology, emphasis on authentication and identity management, and enhanced metrics and measurement provided by CSF 2.0.
In summary, this presentation serves as a comprehensive guide for PMP certified project managers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to excel in managing security-related projects within information security organizations. By combining technical acumen, leadership qualities, and adherence to industry frameworks such as CSF 2.0, project managers can effectively protect organizational assets and ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information systems.

Designing Project Management Around the Brain
Over the past 40 years tools and techniques have exponentially improved, aiming at efficiency and productivity. Yet, the percentage of projects failing to deliver their expected value has remained high. Leading organizations such as Gartner, CIO, PMI, Harvard Business Review, Forrester, and Standish Group, continue to cite the critical gap: lack and misalignment of essential "skills" in project management.
In this presentation, Bill will share how incorporating neuroscience with our learned tools and techniques results in teams aligned to purpose, reducing the physical and mental errors in project delivery, the major cause of project failures, and value-delivered disappointments.
Takeaways:
- Explore the cognitive behavioral impact on modern project management tools and techniques, and how cognitive biases, decision-making processes, and motivational theories influence the effectiveness of project management methodologies.
- Understanding of key cognitive behavior concepts and their relevance to project and program management
- Insights into how cognitive biases and decision-making processes affect team dynamics, tool selection, and project execution
- Strategies to apply cognitive behavior principles to improve the use of current management tools and techniques, enhancing both individual and team performance
