Course Description:

Traditional estimation always seems to lead to cost and time overruns on complex projects. Agile practices, such as scrum, have greatly improved how the work gets done. But the contracts we use and how we initially scope the work haven’t kept pace.

Participants will learn how to bootstrap the agile estimation process so that initial plans and contracts can be created. We’ll explore a variety of contracts that better support agile work. Fear not! This won’t be hours of lecture and slides. The entire workshop will run using scrum. Participants will work together on projects, learning by doing.

The workshop is structured as an agile project, using scrum. The project will have two main deliverables. The first is identifying a better way to estimate work at the very beginning of a project. The second deliverable is finding contracts that support agile projects.

The workshop teaches The Team Estimation Game, created by Steve Bockman. Information about agile contracts is drawn from Contracts For Agile Software Development by Chris Sims, 10 Agile Contracts by Peter Stevens, and other online sources.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the advantages of relative story point estimates over time estimates
  • Describe the the nature of complex work and its implications for estimates and contracts
  • Use the Team Estimation Game to create story point estimates
  • Use story points and velocity to answer what will be done, and when it will be done
  • Describe the pros and cons of several different types of contracts
  • Recommend appropriate contract types for agile engagements
