Description:

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is dedicated to ending local hunger. Since its inception in 1974, Second Harvest has become one of the largest food banks in the nation, providing food to an average of nearly one quarter of a million people each month. The Food Bank mobilizes individuals, companies, and community partners to connect people to the nutritious food they need. Nearly half of the food distributed is fresh produce.

Second Harvest Food Bank provides food efficiently through innovative direct-service programs and by collaborating with a network of more than 300 partner non-profit agencies operating at 985 different food distribution sites. Partner agencies include shelters, pantries, soup kitchens, children's programs, senior meal sites, and residential programs. We occasionally volunteer at some of these other sites, so participating in this event is a great opportunity to see how the various parts of the network work together.

For our morning food sort, we may help with a variety of activities at the Second Harvest Cypress Center. Typical activities include sorting produce to prolong shelf life, packing produce into boxes sized for distribution to partner sites, labeling cans, and sorting individual food donations.

What to Bring and Wear:

Wear comfortable clothing, long pants and closed-toe shoes. Leave purses, backpacks, cell phones, and valuables locked in your car trunk. Please consider bringing a donation of non-perishable food items when you come to sort.

"Volunteers are covered under PMISV's General Liability insurance for any damages /injuries they may cause while at an event when they are acting on behalf of the organization. However, there is no coverage under PMISV's General Liability insurance for injuries to the Volunteer and PMISV does not provide Workers Compensation."
