Workshop Description:
Scheduling can be a difficult subject - there are many knobs to turn, many screens to watch.
No matter which project management technique is followed – traditional waterfall, rolling wave, spiral or even agile and “milestone driven”, the project manager must be able to tie in scope, time and cost. In other words, no project plan is complete without a schedule.
As a group, we will consider situations you may have faced in your professional life and correlate them to the mathematics of scheduling and refine them using techniques suggested in the PMBOK.
Learning Outcomes:
· Identify what belongs in a schedule and what does not.
· Determine how detailed a schedule needs to be for your span of control on the project.
· Correlate scope, time, and cost numerically, incorporating workflow dependencies, resource availability and constraints, as well as lessons learned from previous projects.
· Create a plan project plan through assignments.
· Account for risks and uncertainties in your schedule
· Carry out feasibility checks before commencing execution.
· Track a schedule (i.e., correlate plan to actual execution) and pick the most appropriate corrective action as required.
· Report at an executive as well as a team level
· (BONUS) Use MSFT Project at an intermediate level (if using this tool, and all exercises in the supplemental materials have been completed)
Required Tools and Materials
You do not need to buy any books or materials.
All materials are provided before class in electronic format (PDF for presentations)
This workshop is intended to address scheduling, not teach a particular tool.
However, Microsoft Project, is the most widely used, PMI-compliant tool in the market, and it is suggested that attendees use it in the workshop. And for that the SW must be installed and activated
Note to Mac Users: MS Project does not natively work on a Mac platform. A virtual PC must be created first using VMWare Fusion (or similar) and then a copy of Project must be installed. Using the "cloud" version is an option, but it is not as easy to use as the "desktop" version.
Workshop Instructor:
Sutanu Ghosh - PMP, PMI-ACP, Six Sigma, MCTS
I have been teaching scheduling at various PMI chapters SFSU and UC Santa Cruz for over a decade.
I am currently employed full time at VMWare and have spent more than 20 years in Silicon Valley as a hands-on Project Manager and Dir of PMO, at Bay/NORTEL Networks, Symbol, Lockheed Martin and NetApp.
As an engineering manager I have experience in QA, Sustaining, Release Engineering and Program Management, Engineering Operations, Disaster Recovery and M&A. My first job was at Tata Motors, which ignited my passion for “Lean Six Sigma”.
My passion in Project and Program Management has always centred around scheduling, because I am convinced that a good schedule is critical to all knowledge areas of project management.
I have an MS from Arizona State University, Tempe, in CAD/CAM, and am published on CAX tools.
