Business has always valued the reliable and responsive delivery of services and today’s technology-driven businesses are no exception. These days, it may seem like software-as-a-service (SaaS) has always been here, but as an industry we have had much to learn (and unlearn) along the journey from punchcards and timesharing to the continuous delivery of web and mobile services. In this presentation, I will share some of the lessons I have learned along my journey by telling stories as seen through the lens of delivering services with software. We will see that technical excellence is necessary but not sufficient: SaaS is a team sport, and the DevOps principles of culture, automation, metrics, and sharing are key ingredients to a high-performing team. I will also discuss the challenges and rewards of service delivery at massive scale.

Takeaways:

  • • Shorten feedback loops to go faster with confidence and work uncomfortably small

* Invest in technical practices; if it hurts, do it more often until it doesn’t hurt.

* Software as a service is a team sport; your delivery team is part of the service and its SLA

* Use the scientific method to inform your business-decision process

* To scale, don’t just manage dependencies –  break them
