Description:

Product management is a murky role: poorly understood and inconsistently practiced across tech companies - confused with program and project management. Yet done well, product management is a driver of market success and effective development. This session outlines product management basics, contrasts them with project/ program management, and offers ways for all of us to work more effectively together.

  • Understand what product managers do, how they think, and what drives them
  • Explore theoretical role definitions and how these play out in the real world
  • Appreciate the product/market fit problem
  • Share tips on ways to address organizational challenges

Product managers and project managers attack different sides of the same problem, and need to help each other succeed.

About the Speaker:

Rich Mironov is a seasoned software executive and serial entrepreneur. He’s been the "product guy" at six tech startups including as CEO and VP Marketing/Products. Rich founded the first Product Camp, now a worldwide unconference movement where product managers network, teach, learn and share. His long-running “Product Bytes” blog covers software, start-ups, product strategies, Silicon Valley, and the inner life of product managers. This turned into his book “The Art of Product Management.”  Rich has lectured at business schools and executive education programs around the world, been an SVPMA board member, and chaired the first product manager/ product owner tracks at Agile Alliance’s annual conference.  Rich has a BS Physics from Yale and an MBA from Stanford.
