Description
Estimation is half art, half science, and half magic. (See what I did there?) However it adds up, it’s a trap for the unwary that can make or break projects, careers, even entire businesses. The Standish CHAOS report has consistently shown over the years that barely a third of projects are considered successful, and “success” is often redefined only after the project ends. In other words, apparently estimation is almost impossible. But it’s not!
The thing is, just like going to the gym, you can’t just estimate once and expect perfection. So, in our session, we’ll look not only at estimation techniques, but also at the traps and how to avoid them, and the underlying theories, factors, and praxis of high value estimation. You’ll learn proven techniques that make estimation orders of magnitude more useful than just a numbers game. You’ll come away knowing how estimation can develop your strength, flexibility, and fitness as super-competent project manager.Takeaways:
- Deep understanding of estimation traps to avoid.
- What, how, when, to estimate, with whom, and most importantly, why.
- The cadence and granularity of estimation.
- The language of estimation, good, bad, and ugly.
- The psychology, anthropology, and economics of estimation and how to use them as a force for good.
- Most importantly, confidence in your skill in estimation from now on.
