Whether we like it or not, AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) is coming to Program Management. Although your job is not threatened anytime soon, most believe that the first wave of AI will augment specific tasks but it’s role will only grow from there. We will share examples of how AI helps Program Managers to perform some of their most basic functions, including quantifying program risk and improving schedule predictability. We will also describe exciting new features from Program and Portfolio management programs that leverage AI/ML. We will help you separate the reality from the hype, and show how AI/ML, rather than posing a threat, can also help Program Managers do their jobs better.

The talk will also tackle a specific question: How should you manage the teams doing Data Science in your Program? The development process for AI/ML is different from the typical innovation & development process. Data Science proceeds in a less linear fashion, i.e. in chunks, which makes it difficult to manage and less predictable than traditional programs. You will learn how Program Managers should attract, direct, and supervise Data Scientists – who tend to be a breed apart. We will provide specific organizational guidelines; for example, twice as many engineers should be working with data as working on algorithms. This talk will cover the unique challenges in managing this hot new skill area, and the big egos that come with it.
