This presentation sheds light on how uncertainty and risk can be effectively managed through agile project management. It explores three perspectives that highlight different aspects of agile's ability to address uncertainty and mitigate risk. Firstly, Agile is presented as a resilient framework that reduces risk by prioritizing incremental deliveries, ensuring faster value delivery, and managing stakeholders through regular feedback loops. Secondly, the utilization of product discovery techniques is emphasized, enabling early risk identification, fostering a culture of learning, and actively reducing uncertainty. Lastly, Agile's risk management approach revolves around empowered teams that actively explore, test, and learn, enabling decisions to be made closer to delivery and the customer, thus minimizing risk and uncertainty. Each perspective highlights the importance of learning, testing, and adaptation, enabling teams to effectively navigate engineering constraints and lead times. By embracing agile methodologies, organizations can better respond to uncertainty and manage risk by prioritizing incremental value delivery, employing product discovery techniques, and empowering teams to explore and learn. This presentation encourages a shift towards a more adaptable and resilient approach, where long-term plans are continuously adapted based on real-time feedback, reducing uncertainty and ensuring successful project outcomes.

Book of the month: From Zero to One (time change!) by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters Date: Thursday, July 20, 2023 | 4:00pm - 5:00pm Location: Virtual Host: Marc Scotchlas About the Book From Zero to One by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This book delivers completely new and refreshing ideas on how to create value in the world.”—Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta “Peter Thiel has built multiple breakthrough companies, and Zero to One shows how.”—Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things. Thiel begins with the contrarian premise that we live in an age of technological stagnation, even if we’re too distracted by shiny mobile devices to notice. Information technology has improved rapidly, but there is no reason why progress should be limited to computers or Silicon Valley. Progress can be achieved in any industry or area of business. It comes from the most important skill that every leader must master: learning to think for yourself. Doing what someone else already knows how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. But when you do something new, you go from 0 to 1. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. Tomorrow’s champions will not win by competing ruthlessly in today’s marketplace. They will escape competition altogether, because their businesses will be unique. Zero to One presents at once an optimistic view of the future of progress in America and a new way of thinking about innovation: it starts by learning to ask the questions that lead you to find value in unexpected places. Peter Thiel Peter Thiel is an entrepreneur and investor. He started PayPal in 1998, led it as CEO, and took it public in 2002, defining a new era of fast and secure online commerce. In 2004 he made the first outside investment in Facebook, where he serves as a director. The same year he launched Palantir Technologies, a software company that harnesses computers to empower human analysts in fields like national security and global finance. He has provided early funding for LinkedIn, Yelp, and dozens of successful technology startups, many run by former colleagues who have been dubbed the “PayPal Mafia.” He is a partner at Founders Fund, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm that has funded companies like SpaceX and Airbnb. He started the Thiel Fellowship, which ignited a national debate by encouraging young people to put learning before schooling, and he leads the Thiel Foundation, which works to advance technological progress and long-term thinking about the future. List of Books for 2023 and 2024 : Click Here for more Information About the SV Monthly Book Club : Register Here (email Marc to unregister) The SV Monthly Book Club is a no-cost forum to discuss books and publications that touch on various topics about project and program management. Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority Event When: Saturday, July 29, 2023 8am-12pm Pacific Time Where: Spreckels Hill Wetland Complex (3 miles south of San Jose city limits, roughly 1 mile from the Highway 101 Exit at Bailey Ave. (Location coordinates: 37.195431, -121.734517 ) Last Date for On-line Registration is July 26, 2023 Description: Join us to help restore habitat in Coyote Valley! On Saturday, July 29th, we will be pulling stinkwort, an invasive weed from the disturbed areas along the Spreckels wetland restoration area. This Christmas tree shaped weed is named for its pungent pine-sol smell-- gloves will be provided and long sleeves and pants are encouraged! Since the late 80’s, stinkwort has taken over disturbed habitats in Santa Clara County, after fires and human activity. It not only replaces the native vegetation with thick stands of small stinky shrubs, but it also can pose danger to grazers who may accidentally eat it. Volunteer weeding efforts have made significant progress in controlling this invasive. The work itself will involve bending, kneeling and walking in uneven but flat terrain; it will involve using gloved hands and tools for pulling as well as bagging weeds in large contractor bags to be placed in our dump trailer at the end of the work day. It's a team effort with lots of rewarding moments on the land!
