Global Community of Practice (GCoP) - "Managing Paradigms: The New Focus of Executive Leadership

Power Skills

In his Harvard Business Review Article, Michael D. Watkins describes the purpose of strategy as "about how people throughout the organization should make decisions and allocate resources in order accomplish key objectives. A good strategy provides a clear roadmap, consisting of a set of guiding principles or rules, that defines the actions people in the business should take (and not take) and the things they should prioritize (and not prioritize) to achieve desired goals." People implement what they believe in. Those beliefs (aka assumptions) are inherited by the paradigms that shape our world view. Increasingly, executive leadership recognizes that if they wish to help their people make better decisions, they have to do more to "reshape" the paradigms. The purpose of this workshop is discuss how to manage paradigms to empower decisioning. It begins with an anatomy of the paradigm. This includes components such as concepts, underlying assumptions, value prioritization, and methodology. The workshop ends with techniques for changing paradigms and enabling appropriate delegation. This workshop is intended for anyone who wishes to enable appropriate decision making in subordinates or colleagues via appropriate shaping of the "lens" through which the individuals see their reality.

Brian Levy is the President of BridgePort Digital, an organizational optimization firm specializing in bridging the gap between strategic goals and actual performance outcomes. While others in the industry have avoided metrics, Brian has been able to consistently improve productivity by over 30% within 3 to 6 months of operation. He has accomplished this feat by aligning an organization’s performance management processes to the appropriate strategic approach and by coaching executives through his pioneering techniques in Agile Strategy Management. As an avid fan of continuous improvement, Brian often takes the time to engage in executive coaching personally in order to learn new skills to transfer to his employees. However, his real joy is in putting his Registered Scrum@Scale Trainer status to use in the classroom and training others in the techniques which lead to organizational optimization. That joy is most often utilized via training underrepresented minorities in careers related to software development and using his 10-year-old daughter to explain Management by Acceptance concepts.
