    • Community Outreach
    • Certification Information

    Maintaining Your Certification

Holders of any PMI professional certification credential need to ensure they remains relevant in the evolving skills within the project management profession; maintenance of active status means a dedication to continuous learning for renewal.

    Important To Know

Your certification maintenance and status is between you and PMI; the Chapter (PMI-Silicon Valley) plays no role; other than offering the above activities, which can be claimed for PDUs (Professional Development Units). Any opinions rendered by PMI-SV’s officers or other volunteer leaders are their own and do not necessarily represent valid PMI positions on the subject/issue.
Specific questions about your certification need to be directed to: customercare@pmi.org.

    PMI News

On December 1, 2015 the CCR program underwent a major change. Three subcategories have been created and PDU educational claims have to map to these. How the transition affects you is based on where you are in the renewal cycle; simply put:

    • Starting December 1, 2015, everyone must classify their PDU claims for their current cycle according to the Talent Triangle; both claims already filed and any future claims.
    • Individuals with a certification expiration date on or before November 30, 2017 do not have to meet the new criteria; the pre-change criteria applies to you.
    • Individuals with a certification expiration date on or beyond December 1, 2017 need to meet the new CCR criteria.

You need to be aware of this new criteria, especially if you fall into the latter group because you could be earning PDUs that won’t count toward certification renewal. Please take the time to review the material on PMI’s Web site; they have sent numerous emails to all credential holders.

The www.PMI.org web site is the central source for CCR information. It is important to note that each certification has specific requirements. The best source for certification renewal information is the applicable certification handbook for each credential, which can also be found on the PMI Web site. For holders of multiple certifications, some PDUs may be applicable to all, while others to only one. It pays for you to know, so you can plan accordingly.

    Be Time Wise

Historically, the typical credential holder waits until the last minute; with a few months left in the cycle they do a deep dive to collect enough PDUs. That worked when any PDU was applicable for meeting the requirements. After December 1, 2017, the education criteria changes with a specific minimum number of PDUs and within that number a minimum number in each of three Talent Triangle subcategories: Technical, Business and Leadership. Procrastination could result in you coming up short in one or more subcategories.

Obtaining & Reporting CCR PDUs, for PMI-SV Educational Events, Only

PMI-SV is a prime, low cost source for educational PDUs. Simply, PMI-SV educational events fall into two groups: Those valued at 2.0 PDU or fewer (for example, breakfast meeting and evening seminars) and those over 2.0 PDUs (for example, workshops and symposium). We have 13 regularly scheduled events for a total of 21.5 PDUs, each month. Some months we add one or more workshops into the mix for another 8 PDUs, each. Plus, annually in October we offer a 2-day symposium for another 14 PDUs. Bottom line, participating in chapter events regularly will easily allow you to maintain your certifications.

Categorization (Technical, Business or Leadership) of events for 2.0 or fewer PDUs, will be your responsibility; not the Chapter’s.

Categorization of events greater than 2.0 will be done by the Chapter at the time we register them with PMI. We will publish the category or categories as part of the event promotion. Since these are pre-established you need to ensure they meet your needs.

Finally, starting in 2016, PMI-SV will attempt to achieve an overall balance of event speaker topics within the three new subcategories. This will be a challenge and we can’t ensure the nearest venue will satisfy all your needs; we have 1.400+ certified members and are challenged at time to find presenters. You need to actively manage certification renewal over the cycle; start early and be persistent.
