Design Thinking, popularized by IDEO and the Stanford University d.School, is an incredibly valuable methodology for achieving unprecedented results in product development, project management, business leadership, and beyond. While it’s natural to assume that design thinking would mean “thinking about design” - and that does describe some of what goes on in this process - that’s somewhat misleading. A “leap year” isn’t a whole year of leaping, and design thinking is more than design. It is an approach that goes beyond problem-solving to “thinking from the future” in order to invent solutions that would be difficult to discover by problem-centric approaches.
Both design thinking and Scrappy Project Management© share an obsession with “the customer”. And both start by “thinking from the future” rather than getting stuck in the current situation, hampered by self-limiting beliefs about what’s possible. Rather than using the classic design thinking model of Empathize – Define – Ideate – Prototype – Test, let’s use a cycle that’s a bit easier to remember: Why? – Who? – What? – How?
Using the WHY – WHO – WHAT – HOW cycle as a guide makes this powerful approach easy to remember and accessible to all project teams, even if you are not expert in design thinking.
Learning Outcomes:
- Avoid the "Rush to Solution", the most tempting way to fail in any project!
- Discover the Big WHY purpose for any project.
- Focus on the key stakeholders who will evaluate your project's “success”.
- Define "success", and the measures of that success, through the eyes of your key stakeholders.
- Embrace necessary risk-taking, learning from mistakes, experimenting, prototyping and "failing forward".
- Learn to apply this powerful approach to any project, particularly those that seem “impossible”!
Workshop Instructor: Kimberly Wiefling
Kimberly Wiefling helps people achieve what seems impossible, but is merely difficult. She’s the author of the globally popular book “Scrappy Project Management - The 12 Predictable & Avoidable Pitfalls Every Project Faces”, the founder of Wiefling Consulting, and cofounder of Silicon Valley Alliances.
Her latest book, “Turning Ideas Into Impact”, is an anthology with 15 other Silicon Valley consultants. A physicist by education, she worked at HP for 10 years in 7 different engineering and project management roles, including leading an R&D team launching a new mass spectrometer, then 3 years in Silicon Valley startups leading product development teams in hardware, software, and complex systems involving both. She’s worked with 50+ globalizing Japanese companies, and with people from over 50 differentcountries, helping organizations solve global problems profitably.
Kimberly lives and works in Silicon Valley, and has helped to start, run and grow many small businesses, including several that are still alive and profitable, and one of which grew to millions in revenue with only seed funding from her and the other founders.
Kimberly’s superpower is turning managers into leaders and groups into true teams who can achieve “impossible” together.
She’s been described as a “force of nature”, and is determined to use that force to make a significant positive impact on our world.
